What couples therapy costs depends on the therapist, the city and whether insurance pays any of it. Instead of quoting national averages, this guide shows the fees that verified couples therapists list on their own websites in the cities we cover. The numbers update as we verify more cities.
Fees listed by verified therapists
Per-session fees stated on therapists’ own websites. The typical fee is the middle value across therapists in that city. We only show cities where at least three verified therapists list a fee.

Does insurance cover couples therapy?
All Marketplace health plans must cover behavioral health treatment, such as psychotherapy and counseling, and limits on mental health services can’t be more restrictive than limits on medical and surgical care.1 Whether a plan pays for sessions with both partners depends on the plan. Before your first session, ask your insurer and the therapist:
- Is the therapist in network for our plan?
- Does the plan cover sessions with both partners present?
- If the therapist is out of network, can we get a receipt to submit for reimbursement, and what will the plan pay back?
Many couples therapists don’t bill insurance at all. Each listing in our directory shows what the therapist’s website says about insurance.
Ways to pay less
- Sliding scale. Some therapists lower their fee based on income. Across our verified listings, 23% mention a sliding scale.2
- Online sessions. Online sessions let you choose from therapists across your state, not just your neighborhood.
- Pre-licensed associates. Associates practicing under supervision may charge less. They’re not listed in our directory, but many group practices employ them.
